Guns

Expressions of hatred are now more deadly because of the ease with which firearms can be obtained. For example, white supremacists may use firearms to intimidate and threaten political opponents. Armed opposition is a characteristic of hate groups and civil paramilitary organizations. By disarming these groups with guns, the public will no longer feel threatened by these violent, ideological, and racial extremists.

Hate

Last year, Jason Hayes, a member of the LGBTQ community from New Jersey, organized a national rally to stop gun violence and protect LGBTQ civil rights. The rally, called DISARM HATES, attracted nine individuals from Los Angeles who came to Washington, DC to support Jason. This bill, which is a companion bill for the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, is now back in Congress. This Act would ban those convicted for misdemeanor hate crime from possessing or purchasing firearms.

Gun laws

A new federal bill, known as the Disarm Hate Act, would prevent would-be gun buyers from buying guns if they have committed a hate crime. The Disarm Hate Act will not only apply to hate crimes laws in other states, but also would prohibit those convicted from purchasing guns. Background checks for potential gun buyers would be required under the Disarm Hate Act, which is already required by FBI.

Extreme risk laws

To stop mass shootings and gun murder, extremist risk laws were established. This law gives petitioners permission to ask a court to temporarily remove a gun from a person who is potentially dangerous. These laws aren't yet widely used by the public but states are starting to use them in certain instances. These laws can be used to prevent mass shootings and gun-homicides in certain cases. Below are some examples.

Pulse nightclub shooting

Disarm Hate is a documentary about nine LGBTQ activists who participated in a nationwide rally to end gun violence in Orlando and protect LGBTQ civil rights. Harvey Fierstein tells the story. In the film, activists fight the NRA while fighting for gun reform. They challenge America's obsession about gun violence. Here's a look at the film.

Sandy Hook Promise

Several groups, including the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Gays Against Guns, CeaseFire PA, and the Generation Progress Fund have endorsed the Sandy Hook Promise to Disarm Hate Act. In response to the Pulse nightclub shooting that claimed 49 lives, the legislation was introduced in 2011. However, it died in committee. This year, following the tragic anniversary Pulse, Senator Casey has reintroduced this bill. Although the Disarm Hate Act may not be enacted immediately, members of the community can make steps to advance it.
